From the judges: This team worked really hard to deliver a well-produced publication that addressed the challenging times we all face as a nation, giving a nod to both the pandemic and the historic race issues. This entry provided very thoughtful responses to each topic. The 64-page publication is very well done, and we love that this process has redefined how they will produce content for their audiences in the future.

Institution: James Madison University
Title of entry: Madison - Spring/Summer 2020
About this entry: The Spring/Summer 2020 issue of Madison focuses its feature content on the premise of seizing opportunity. The magazine, which was published digitally due to COVID-19, illustrates the theme by telling stories of people affiliated with James Madison University who have put their Madison Experience into action to create successes. Included are features about the institution’s first African American graduate, whose career in education and ministry continues 50 years after her graduation; a Major League Soccer star who established an urban gardening and healthful eating enterprise; a pediatric oncologist who treats children and researches in the lab to improve their outcomes; an alumnus who discovered that his ancestry links him with James Madison; a JMU graduate working to ensure medical supplies get to hospitals during the pandemic; a graduate student making the most of her time in Cameroon to study endangered primates; a biology major and aspiring dermatologist who is developing his own line of skincare products; and a group of interdisciplinary students who applied critical-thinking skills learned at JMU to help improve decision-making at NATO. Supporting the feature well are standing magazine departments, including News&Notes, our capital campaign, By the Numbers, JMU Nation (athletics news) and Alumni for Life, including Class Notes.
